Lead:
A quickie review of where we’ve been in Leviticus and what to anticipate.
Intro:
Hey all you listeners, let me give you a visual — as best as I can, of where we’ve been and where we’re going in the book of Leviticus. Remember that Leviticus is like a continuation of Exodus which ended with building the temple or tabernacle. And in Leviticus we see that the purpose is to manifest God’s glory among the people. We’ve heard about different kinds of offerings and how they were to be handled and the establishment of the priesthood which, as we are reading in Hebrews, culminates and ends with the Great High Priest, Jesus.
Finally, we heard about this weird clean/unclean thing, and we might think about germs, but for God’s people we see actually three different levels of ritual states — unclean, clean, and holy. And these are key to the whole book…even if we don’t have time to do a dive here. But when, for instance, Peter quotes Leviticus saying “be holy, for I am holy,” he’s drawing on the Levitical reference of the relationship between ritual purity and moral purity.
Mercifully, then today we end the part of Leviticus about cleanness and uncleanness, hear about “the Day of Atonement,” the handling and meaning of blood, and the beginning of a section calling the Israelites to holiness. And if are thinking “Hey, blood, atonement, Jesus,” you’d be exactly on the right track.
