Jesus chooses disciples and begins community formation; Moses begins his final sermons.
Intro:
Hey, welcome to a new week! God is sovereign, Jesus is king, and we have nothing to fear…and if you want to know the peace and healing that comes — and only comes — by being filled with the Holy Spirit when we turn to and trust Jesus, call me.
Today in the Old Testament we’ll be wrapping up Numbers and beginning Deuteronomy, the last book of what is known as the Pentateuch — the first five books of the Bible. The Israelites refer to it as Torah — “the Law” — which really means “the writings or the teachings.” So the Greek where we get “Deuteronomy” literally means “second law” — deutero- nomos.
Where it sits, Numbers delivers on the broad theme of the gradual fulfillment of God’s promises to Abraham, and we’ve seen the journey from Egypt end just across the Jordan River from the promised land. In the narrative, however, the beginning of crossing the river and taking the land of promise doesn’t begin until the book of Joshua. So here we sit. You’ll recall that Moses doesn’t get to cross over, so Deuteronomy is basically about three speeches and a couple poems exhorting the people not to repeat the mistakes of their predecessors.
Now here’s a biggie: do NOT forget that a major theme of Deuteronomy is love. Really! That’s what God’s covenant is all about — he first loved us, right? Deuteronomy demonstrates his loving faithfulness that results mercy — all for the sake of the promise he made to Abraham.
So I know that’s a lengthier intro, but it’s reeeeally important to keep the big story in mind as we wade through stories that often seem weird to us 3500 years later.
But let’s talk about Luke and get rolling. As we peer into the the beginnings of Jesus’ ministry, we’ve been in Galilee which is north of Jerusalem to the tune of 2-3 day’s journey. Today in Luke 5 we end Luke’s introduction of his ministry and transition into the part of the narrative where new community is being formed (we’ll see the rest of that tomorrow).
