Focus Question:
What is the Holy Spirit’s relationship with the Son?
Intro:
Christmas is now nearly upon us, and the temptation for some will be to let the hurry or worry of the season diminish our communion with Jesus. Looking forward a few days, I do hope you’ll catch the reflections that will mark the 24th and 25th, and don’t miss tomorrow’s final, part-four of our Sunday Advent reflections — I promise you (for better or worse!) it’ll not be like any other advent musings you bump into.
NEW TESTAMENT SEGMENT:
In our NT segment, you might remember that the book of Hebrews begins with the author saying ‘in the past God spoke through the prophets, but that’s done…now He’s spoken through what puts all that to a final end…His Son.’ And then the author uses the word “therefore” for the first of a bunch of times. Therefore you’re an idiot if you neglect the offer of salvation (ch2). Today that argument continues in a section that we’ll be in for a few days... (Ch 3) Therefore Jesus is superior to Moses and the OT Law, therefore (ch 4-5) since he hasn’t come back, you still can accept that salvation, therefore hold fast and endure, therefore (ch 6) quit being elementary school kids in your learning and get serious about your studies like grown ups. Oh, and our focus question today…what is the Holy Spirit’s relationship with the Son?
Passage: Hebrews 3
Translation: CSB (Christian Standard Bible)
Verses: 19
Words: ~433
Today we’re going to end with our OT segment, so here’s the short answer of “What is the Holy Spirit’s relationship to Jesus?”
In short, Jesus said,
He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. Jn 16:14–15, CSB.
The Holy Spirit was active in the creation of the cosmos (Gen 1:1–2). He came upon individuals at critical junctures to move redemptive history toward the cross of Christ. During the incarnation, “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power” (Acts 10:38). The Spirit empowered Jesus to live sinlessly, preach the kingdom of God, and go to the cross. Christ’s resulting glorification enabled Him to send the Spirit so that all who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ might be indwelt by His Spirit and empowered to glorify Christ. The Holy Spirit always seeks to glorify the Son.(1)
…which is exactly what we saw quoted by the author of Hebrews today.
