Lede:

And all that “everybody’s sinful” stuff in Romans so far now lands on…HOPE!

Intro:

Factoid of the day: in Pauls’s epistle to the Romans, his longest writing, is just shy of 9500 words. And there are five significant words that each appear at least 60 times: Righteousness, Faith, Law, Sin, All.

So as you’ve already heard me say, Romans is not only Paul’s delivery of the Gospel — the good news — it’s also highly argumentative. And remember that an argument…at least in terms of one it’s dictionary definitions…is the way theologians and philosophers and debate teams use it…to lay out a reason or set of reasons designed to persuade others of a point. There’s a difference between that and being argumentative…which has a lot to do with heart and humility.

Anyway, as we make the turn into Romans 5 today, we begin with the word “therefore.” All this stuff about every single person being able to know God from creation and therefore having no excuse, all the stuff about how every single person is sinful and deserving of God’s righteous judgment now launches into the beginning of him talking about the solution…this same God’s righteous grace and, as we’ll see Monday, new life in Christ.
