Focus:
Who was “Lord of the Flies?'“
Intro:
Some of you may remember William Golding’s classic book, Lord of the Flies, about some young boys who get stuck on an island. Have you ever wondered where that book title came from?
Well, as it turns out — and I know you’ll find this to be a surprise — but it’s not only from the Old Testament, but we’re going to read about it today in the book of Kings and we’ll see how it connects to Jesus.
New covenant:
Passage: 2 Timothy 2
Translation: CSB (Christian Standard Bible)
Verses: 26
Words: ~511
Old covenant:
Passage: 1 Kings 22:40-2 Kings1
Translation: CSB (Christian Standard Bible)
Verses: 30
Words: ~914
Wisdom:
Passage: Psalm 45, 121, 125
Translation: CSB (Christian Standard Bible)
Verses: 17+8+5 = 30
Words: ~279+131+82 = 492
Commentary:
Baal was a title, not a name. Sometimes “baals,” plural.
By the time of Christ, Baalzebul was equated with Satan (Mark 3:22-30)
Baal-zebul = “lord of the lofty abode” or “princely lord.”
Baal-zebub = play on words = “lord of the flies”
