Don’t appeal to God’s sovereignty too quickly. It might be true, but timing is important.
Don’t launch into a story about how God used your suffering. That’s more about you than them.
Don’t minimize the sin that caused the suffering.
Don’t emphasize character formation while neglecting comfort and compassion. (1)
