One of the risks of meeting with you every day and being a theology student is that sometimes I’m wrestling with answers to questions people aren’t asking. I’m guessing that the Roman Catholic doctrine of purgatory — as in “what the heck?” — might be one of those.

Still, I learned something today and I’m going to pass it along in our All Our Minds segment today. You can make it your useless factoid of the week. Oh, and BTW, for the sake of time I’m not writing it in the notes, so this is a rare time I’m not going to point you to the corresponding blog post for more info. If you have questions, give me a shout.

In terms of our Bible reading today, this is a good example of the imperfection of the Bible’s chapter system that was developed hundreds of years ago. Yesterday we heard Paul kick off with thanksgiving for the Thessalonian’s faith, love, and hope and expressing confidence in how God had been at work in them. then we started to hear Paul’s defense of the missionaries who are now absent, and we pick up in the middle of that. As is typical for Paul, we then move into his exhortations for Christian living, and then we’ll hear him get a lot more specific about Jesus’ second coming than we’ve ever heard…and stop right in the middle of that.

That’ll leave but a single chapter for tomorrow, but what I’m thinking is about giving you a little sneak peak and what I’m working on for us as we get to 2020.

Not used today, but stuff I like:

 D. A. Carson, For the Love of God: A Daily Companion for Discovering the Riches of God’s Word., vol. 1 (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Books, 1998).

Craig S. Keener, The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament (Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press, 1993). <—this, and it’s OT companion, are great commentaries if you like something more than a study Bible and less than a set of 66 books — they add a lot of interesting details. Keener’s a killer apologist, too.

The Story of Reality, Greg Koukl — Love this book. A killer intro to the Christian worldview that is philosophically and theologically sound while being accessible to all readers.
