Lead:

What’s the whole argument in the book of Hebrews lead up to? This.

Intro:

So, this was entirely unplanned, but a pleasant coincidence is that today we not only close out the book of Hebrews, but the separate daily advent reading that I’m doing this season utilizes a couple verses out of the same part of Hebrews. It’ll be a separate message, of course, but it should be fun.

As we roll into today in Hebrews we’ll be starting with a “therefore.” In other words, the writer is about to deliver the payload of his argument. So here’s a fifty thousand foot fly by of where we’ve been: Here’s this Jesus dude who, despite what you know about Him as a human being, is the eternal Son of God, superior to angels, Moses, the Mosaic Law, and your uncle Bill who “knows stuff.” In fact, He’s the promised final and ultimate revelation of God, both King and High Priest, who doesn’t just make the old covenant obsolete, but inaugurates a new, permanent covenant. In light of all that, check out all these people from Abel and Abraham and Sarah to a whole bunch of people dealing with torture and more who trusted God’s promise even though they never saw it come to fruition during their lifetimes. Yet now that Jesus, the promised Messiah, has come we have all the more reason to trust that His rescue mission is the real deal and, is not only worth our eternal worship, but worth our trust and endurance and persistence in the here and now.

Got that?
