Intro:

In our last few segments in Luke we’ve heard about the meaning and mandate of mission, but now Luke takes a turn from mission to discipleship — which is expressed in service to others. And interestingly, the word discipleship has the same root as discipline — as in spiritual discipline — and in “discipline” which is sometimes used to mean correction. The root, of course, is learning, and a disciple is a learner. So it’s interesting that Luke’s context of learning is in serving others. So beyond the giving heart of a disciple, a disciple

…is not like the rich man, who ignored Lazarus (16:19–31). Though false teaching is a threat, it is overcome with forgiveness of the brother, deep faith, and service (17:1–10). Disciples are to see themselves as slaves who do their duty (17:7–10), something Paul also knew (Rom 1:1).

Disciples are to live, looking for the hope of the King’s return, when the promise of the currently inaugurated kingdom is consummated with judgment and the expression of Jesus’ total authority (Luke 17:11–18:8). That coming will be sudden, so be ready. It will be visible, so no one will have to hunt for it. The return will be a time of severe judgment but also a time of vindication for the saints. So in the meantime, disciples should live lives of humility, should devote themselves completely to God because disciples trust all to the Father (18:9–30). (1)
