"What does God want for you?" could be a whole book unto itself. But today we’re going to examine it in light of our OT and NT segments, because it’s a message of hope — and more. More importantly, it’s a good reminder of truth in a world where almost-truth abounds, and it’s always profitable to focus for a moment on the thing that should make your heart sing.
#1206: What are the three levels of belief? | John 6:43-71 | Jeremiah 46-47 | Psalm 134
#1203: Should you pray for vengeance? | John 4:1-42 | Jeremiah 42-43:7 | Psalm 83
#1202: Did Jesus teach reincarnation? | John 3 | Jeremiah 39-41
#1201: Why overturn the money tables? | John 2 | Jeremiah 37-38 | Proverbs 16:29-17:5
#1199: Did Jesus have a beginning? | John 1:1-18 | Jeremiah 34-35 | Proverbs 16:25-28
#1197: Why does God keep the Israelites around? | 2 Peter 2 | Jeremiah 31:31-32:44
#1188: What's the consequence of envy? | James 3 | Jeremiah 14:19-15:21 | Psalm 77 | Proverbs 15:28-16:16
Yesterday we heard James call out his audience for favoring the nicely-dressed person walking into church over the poorly dressed person, but the broader principle is that favoritism or partiality of any kind is a sin because it fails to honor all people who are God’s image bearers. Favoritism can go any direction.
Today is related…and our focus question is, “What is the consequence of envy?"
#1187: What is partiality? | James 2 | Jeremiah 13-14:18 | Proverbs 15:15-28
At the beginning of today’s passage in James 2, you’re going to hear James address his audience about a particular sin…the sin of partiality. And that’s our focus question today…What is the sin of partiality?
But those who have ears, let them hear. When we think about A) the whole Bible, and B) how this is applied and misapplied today, what is something that is often missed? How does this apply to all people?
#1174: What did Isaiah model in prayer? | 1 Corinthians 16 | Isaiah 63-64 | Psalm 70
#1173: Will our spiritual bodies be non-material? | 1 Corinthians 15 | Isaiah 61-62 | Psalm 128
#1169: What OT passage is quoted most? | Isaiah 50:4-53:12
#1153: What does "Abel to Zechariah" signify? | Matthew 23 | Isaiah 15-18 | Proverbs 13:1-10
#1151: When does Jesus deliver justice? | Matthew 21 | Isaiah 11-12 | Psalm 9-10
Today’s OT and Wisdom segments both speak to justice again and, unlike most days where the focus question is about something we bump into in the text, today’s a bigger picture view, because it’s important to remember. When does Jesus deliver justice? We’ll tackle that very briefly at the end of today.
